Why Indians Queued Overnight for iPhone 18 Despite Minutes-Long Delivery

Apple's iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max officially went on sale in India on September 18, but the launch created a scene that seemed almost surprising in the era of instant online shopping: customers were willing to spend the night waiting outside Apple Stores.

Long queues were reported in Mumbai, Delhi, Noida, Bengaluru and other cities. Some customers arrived several hours before stores opened, while others reportedly waited overnight to make sure they were among the first buyers.

The unusual part? Customers did not necessarily need to stand in line. The new iPhones were also available online, while quick-commerce platforms offered delivery to eligible locations shortly after sales began.

India's iPhone 18 Launch Began at 8am

Apple opened pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 12. General sales in India began at 8am on September 18, placing the country among the first markets to receive the new Pro models.

The physical launch attracted crowds at Apple's major retail locations, including stores in Mumbai, Delhi, Noida and Bengaluru. For some shoppers, getting to the store early was part of the excitement surrounding the launch itself.

Why Wait Overnight When the Phone Can Be Delivered?

The answer appears to be about more than delivery speed. For many dedicated Apple customers, launch day has developed into an annual event. Buying the phone directly from an Apple Store gives customers the chance to experience the opening-day atmosphere and become part of the first wave of buyers.

Gulf News reported that some enthusiasts travelled from other parts of India specifically to purchase the new devices. In Bengaluru, customers from places including Haryana, Delhi and Mumbai were among those waiting outside the store.

For these customers, the queue was not simply a way to obtain a smartphone. The launch itself had become part of the experience.

Quick-Commerce Changed the Launch-Day Experience

The biggest contrast with previous iPhone launches was the availability of rapid delivery. BigBasket said it had delivered more than 300 iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units by 9am on launch day — more than five phones per minute during that period.

Blinkit and Zepto also offered the latest iPhones through their platforms in eligible areas. That meant some customers could receive the device at home without spending hours outside a retail store.

This created two very different launch experiences: one focused on speed and convenience, and another focused on being physically present at an Apple Store on release morning.

iPhone 18 Pro Price in India

  • iPhone 18 Pro: Starting at ₹164,900
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: Starting at ₹179,900
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max 2TB: ₹329,900
  • Sales began: September 18, 2026
  • Store opening time: 8am on launch day
  • Pre-orders: Began September 12, 2026

What Made the New Pro Models Attractive?

The iPhone 18 Pro models arrive with Apple's A20 Pro chip, upgraded camera technology and additional AI-related capabilities through iOS 27. The Pro models also include a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max is offered in a new Burgundy finish, adding another visual change for customers upgrading from earlier generations.

For Some Buyers, the Queue Is Part of the Tradition

The overnight crowds show that convenience is not the only factor influencing launch-day shopping. Online ordering can make receiving a phone much easier, but physical store launches provide something different: the atmosphere of release day, interaction with other fans and the feeling of being among the first customers.

That helps explain why queues continued to form even when faster delivery options were available. For a section of Apple's most enthusiastic customers, the launch is an event as much as it is a product purchase.
